See it, stop it!
Everyone can help to protect each other. If you see someone being bullied, speak out.
"I've been bullied for 10 years and I've known a few bystanders. I can't believe people that are supposed to be your friends just stand there and let you get called names or beat up."
People who see bullying happening and don't do anything are called bystanders.
Why get involved?
You can make a big difference if you do get involved. Most bullying stops within 10 seconds when someone else steps in. So your help is really important!
Remember: If you're ever bullied, you'll want the people around you to help you. So you should help them when they're getting picked on.
What should you do?
It's very important to tell someone in authority what's happening.
- The person you tell can help both the bullied person and the bully.
- Try telling a teacher or a parent, or ringing a helpline. If you're not sure who to tell, talk to your Connexions Personal Adviser.
- You could also talk to the person being bullied. You could help them decide what to do about it, and offer them your support.
- You could even speak to the bully about it, but you should never put yourself at risk. Just telling them to stop picking on someone might be all it takes to make them think about what they're doing.
However you deal with bullying, don't ever ignore it. It won't just go away.
Never put yourself at risk
