Talking to parents & carers

It’s not always very easy to talk with people close to you about personal stuff going on in your life, but it may help to stop you finding yourself in a big mixed up situation one day. So have a go – they often know things that might surprise you!

Try to keep these top tips in mind when bringing up the subject of sex with people:

  • choose your moment and don’t leave it 'til there’s an emergency. There’s no right time so when you’re ready will do, like if you both hear something interesting on the news about sex that you could chat about
  • be patient – they’re probably as nervous about “going there” as you are!
  • ask questions – remind them that you want answers, not lectures
  • respect their boundaries and ask them to respect yours; no personal questions
  • start with something simple, like what they think about a relationship going on in a soap or something.
