The Morning After Pill

The Morning After Pill

  • There are two forms of Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC): a pill taken within 72 hours or a coil (IUD) fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
  • If EHC is taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex it is most effective and will prevent over 9 out of 10 pregnancies.*
  • If an emergency IUD is fitted it is almost 100% effective at preventing pregnancy whenever it is fitted.
  • EHC isn’t intended for regular use and like the pill doesn’t protect against STIs.
  • Someone over the age of 16 can buy EHC from a pharmacy.
