List of benefits
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Budgeting Loans (BL) | A Budgeting Loan is an interest-free loan, which is designed to help people with one-off expenses that can be difficult to budget for when claiming certain state benefits. |
| Carers Allowance (CA) | The Carer’s Allowance is a weekly paid benefit that is paid to those people who look after someone who is either disabled or in poor health. You do not have to have paid National Insurance Contributions (NICs) to qualify for the Carer’s Allowance, and as a non-means tested benefit, your personal circumstances should not affect the amount that you are likely to receive. |
| Child Benefit (CB) | Child Benefit is a benefit which is payable to anyone who is responsible for looking after a child under the age of 16, or under the age or 19 if they are in full-time, non-advanced education. |
| Child Tax Credit (CTC) | The Child Tax Credit is a payment which is made to families with children. It is a means-tested benefit, so the amount that you could expect to receive will depend on your family’s individual circumstances. |
| Community Care Grant (CCG) | Community Care Grants are payments from the Social Fund, and are aimed at helping people who are receiving either Income Support or Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, or for those people who are likely to get one of these benefits when moving out of residential or institutional accommodation. |
| Council Tax Benefit (CTB) | Council Tax Benefit is a means-tested benefit that is paid to people who have a low income, and have problems affording all or part of their Council Tax bill. Council Tax Benefit is paid for by the Government, but is distributed through the Local Authority (Council). |
| Crisis Loans (CL) | A Crisis Loan is an interest-free loan from the Social Fund, which is intended to help people with their immediate short-term need in an emergency or disaster. You do not have to be claiming benefits to be awarded a loan, but you will need to repay the loan over a specific period of time. |
| Disability Living Allowance (DLA) | The Disability Living Allowance is the main disability benefit for people who are under the age of 65, and who have care or mobility needs (or both). The Disability Living Allowance is a non-means tested benefit and will not be affected if you have a job. Instead, the amount that you could receive will depend on the assessment of your needs. |
| Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) | The EMA is aimed at getting students from lower-income families to stay on in education after they have completed their GCSE’s and is available for both academic and vocational courses. |
| Guardian's Allowance (GA) | The Guardian’s Allowance is a benefit that is paid on a weekly basis to people who are looking after a child, or children, whose parents are no longer around. |
| Housing Benefit (HB) | Housing Benefit is a means-tested benefit that is paid to people who live in rented accommodation, and who have problems affording their rent. |
| Incapacity Benefit (IB) | Incapacity Benefit is a weekly payment, which is made to those people who are incapable of working due to ill health. |
| Income Support (IS) | Income Support is a weekly benefit paid to people who have no (or very little) income. Unlike its partner, Jobseeker's Allowance, Income Support can be paid to those people who do not have to be ‘actively seeking work’, such as single parents, carers, the bereaved, and sick or disabled people. |
| Jobseeker’s Allowance | Jobseeker’s Allowance is a weekly benefit for people who are unemployed, or have very little or no income. However, in order to qualify for Jobseeker’s Allowance, you must be "available for work". |
| Maternity Allowance (MA) | The Maternity Allowance is a weekly benefit which you may be entitled to claim if you are pregnant or have just had a baby and you do not qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay (paid by your employer). |
| Working Tax Credit (WTC) | The Working Tax Credit is a means-tested payment, which is designed to top-up the earnings of working people on low incomes, including those who do not have children. |
